PATCA's Legal Essentials Series for Consultants & Contractors

Santa Clara, CA, March 15, 2007 - PATCA has introduced a spring "Legal Essentials Series" workshop designed to enhance the legal knowledge base of professional and technical consultants. The series kicked off with an Issue Briefing session in early March, and continues with an-depth workshop that covers important 21st century legal considerations for of direct concern to consultants and contractors.

The workshop will be led by PATCA members Lisa Chapman, an employment law specialist and counsel with Nixon Peabody LLP, and Judy Player of the Law Offices of Judith A. Player, an expert on small business law who has worked with both individual and corporate clients.

The Consultants' and Contractor's Legal Essentials Workshop asks the key question all consultants face when they become independent contractors: whether to remain a solo practitioner or team up with one or more partners.

The workshop will explore in depth:

  • When it makes sense to incorporate
  • Contracts: the good, the bad and the ugly
  • Nondisclosure agreements vs. your right to work
  • Document retention rules to protect you and your client

About the Presenters:

PATCA member Lisa Chapman, J.D., specializes in labor and employment law. The author of Entrepreneur's Guide to Employment Law in the Workplace: Strategies for Legal Compliance, Chapman's practice is twofold: she litigates employment and trade secret matters and counsels companies and entrepreneurs about employment matters, including employment policies, hiring and termination issues, appropriate notice, leave of absence conflicts, non-competition provisions in employment contracts and severance packages. She also advises on sexual harassment (including the employer's duty to provide a safe work environment), compliance and trade secret issues. Chapman graduated from the University of San Francisco School of Law.

Judy Player, J.D., is a commercial lawyer with more 20 years of experience as in-house counsel and more than four years in private practice. Her areas of expertise include advising small companies on formation issues, negotiating all types of contracts and otherwise providing a broad range of legal support to facilitate large and small business in hi-tech, low-tech and no-tech industries. In her representation of individual and corporate clients, she has helped individuals grow into companies, helped companies get started and grow and drafted and successfully closed many flavors of agreements around the world in numerous fields and industries. Player graduated from the University of Connecticut, School of Law, and received her M.B.A. from San Jose State University.
